Robert E. Smith Memorial Chemistry Scholarship

Dr. Smith was born in Los Angeles, CA, and spent his childhood in Sweet Home Oregon. He received both his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate degrees from Brigham Young University. He joined the US Army in 1968 and served his country both on active and reserve duty until his retirement as a Master Sergeant in 2003. During his service he received numerous awards and citations including the National Defense Service Medal. He was a devoted Chemistry professor for 40 years. For the last 21 years he taught at Longview Community College impacting hundreds of students in healthcare related fields. In March of the 2012, he received the Missouri Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was a member of the Lee’s Summit Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various church positions.
